Abstract The Internet is making it possible to collect thousands of interviews in a day without interviewers, saving both time and cost. However, because the Internet allows little control of who responds to the survey, and the sequencing of questions is difficult, it means that correct sampling procedures and administrative methodologies are being ignored. These problems are being addressed by a new system for Internet surveys that keeps all sampling and administrative capabilities of the finest computer assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) systems. As the Internet becomes more widely used and as users become more representative of the population, more interviews will be conducted on this new cost-effective medium.
